News & Offers
Your business is located in an area that could benefit from the provision of Superfast Broadband Services. Ashford Borough Council in partnership with Kent County Council and Shepway District Council are pursuing a share of £20million Rural Community Broadband Fund available nationally to assist areas that are currently in the 10% hardest to reach areas for Broadband provision.
What do we need from you?
In order to bid for a share of the Rural Community Broadband Fund, Ashford Borough Council needs to prove that there is adequate demand for increased Broadband provision in its rural areas.
We are asking for 2 things from businesses located in potential bid areas
1. Vote for Better Broadband
Kent County Council have launched a Vote for Better Broadband Survey. The results of this survey are essential in proving demand for increased Broadband provision in the areas covered by our bid.
The link to the Vote for Better Broadband Survey is listed below. Please encourage as many of your employees, business associates and contacts to fill in this survey as possible, even if they do not live in the Ashford area. All submitted surveys will assist in proving demand in Kent.
2. Write a letter of Support
As well as the technical supporting evidence that will be submitted with our bid we have been asked to provide letters of support from businesses and key stakeholders in our area.
A letter of support could include:
- A brief description of your business
- The impact having better broadband would have on your business
- The number of employees your business has
- A sentence stating that you support the Ashford Borough Council and Shepway District Council project lead by Kent County Council
Please submit all letters, on headed paper, for the attention of:

What happens next?
An expression of interest will be submitted along with our proof of demand at the end of January. Following this our project will be assessed by DEFRA and successful projects will be invited to submit a more detailed bid in Summer 2012. Should you submit a letter of support I will keep you up to date with the process as it moves forward.
If you have any questions on the bid please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you in advance for your support on this project.

The Taste of Wye food map. The beautiful full-colour map shows the many food-related businesses in and around Wye, and aims to encourage more people to buy local food and eat in Wye’s restaurants and pubs. It has been produced by the Wye Business Association, and designed by Wye resident Sue Nelson, a talented food writer and artist. The map was launched at Wye Farmer’s Market. Collect your copy from Wye Bakery! 5,000 copies have been printed, financed by 17 local businesses. The map’s producers want it to be displayed in as many public places as possible, so please take a copy for display, for example at your place of work.
There are future plans to produce the map as a leaflet, so that it can go in tourist offices, and as a larger version for framing. There’s one apology to be made, to The Tickled Trout for getting its phone number wrong (the correct one is 01233 812227). This error will be corrected in future versions. Large High Quality Art Prints of this map for framing are now on sale. Contact John Claydon of Crown Print Tel:01233 812 983.

Promoting Wye’s Good Food
- a new initiative by the Wye Business Association
A Local Food Group has just been set up by the Wye Business Association (WBA), to promote Wye as a ‘good food’ destination. As Sarah Mackey of Ripple Farm Organics points out, “We are lucky in Wye to have such a great choice of places to eat and outlets to buy locally-produced foods. We also have some really good produce from local farms.”
The aim of the Group is to encourage more people to shop and eat in Wye. Mary Braithwaite of Wye Bakery explains, “There is increasing interest in “local food”, not only to reduce food miles and packaging, but also because of its freshness and knowing where and how it is produced. Our aim is to encourage more people in Wye to buy more regularly from local shops and producers, and to attract more people from Ashford and other areas.”
A recent leaflet announced the launch of “Wye Food Village” and the creation of the Group to local people. The Group has produced a Local Food Map, to show local people and visitors where to find the great local food and food-related products. A Food festival held in the summer was a great success.
Local food producers include:
- Ripple Farm Organics – organic vegetables
- Wye Bakery – real bread, buns and pastries
- The Wooden Spoon – quality jam and preserves
- Wye Community Farm, Wye Goat Farm and Money Tree Farm – excellent local meat
- Wye Farmers’ Market – a range of local foods
The Wooden Spoon is now also host to a cluster of artisan food producers, including Chapel Press rapeseed oil, Karimix oriental sauces and Darenth Valley pickles.
Wye also has a total of eight places to eat and drink, covering British and international cuisines : Devil’s Kneading Trough, King’s Head, Wife of Bath, Joshan of Wye, Tickled Trout, New Flying Horse, Golden Wye and Latte e Miele.
Other food shops in Wye include family-run Wakelin the butchers and an excellent Co-op.
In addition, you can find everything you need to grow and cook your own food at the exceptionally well-stocked Lepper’s ironmongers, as well as beautiful oven-to-table ware at Ticketyboo.
For a rural village, Wye has an amazing range of food-related outlets and activities.
For more information on the Wye Food initiative, send an email to wyefoodvillage@yahoo.com or phone Mary Braithwaite at Wye Bakery (01233 812 218).
